Kaspersky Lab report suggests that once the app is downloaded, the spyware collects broad information about the Android user which includes call logs, geolocation, contact access, and SMS access. Moreover, many of the earlier version of apps did not contain any malicious payloads which also helped the apps in clearing the security checks. The research also adds that the developers behind these malicious apps have created fake profiles on websites like GitHub to create a layer of legitimacy for these applications. Moreover, those behind the campaign are doing everything possible to keep these malicious apps hidden from the security features of Google Play store. Along with this, the malicious apps have also been found on the APK download website APKpure. The researchers highlight that there are dozens of malicious apps on the Play Store which are connected to PhantomLace and are harbouring new Trojan. A campaign called PhantomLace has been active from last four year and is still going on.
